Abortion in Iowa City

In 2005, there were approximately 6,175 abortions performed in Iowa, in 9 clinics throughout the state.  Of those, nearly half occurred in Iowa City in 3 locations.

With nearly 3,000 abortions per year occurring in Iowa City, the most abortions in the nation per capita, we have a responsibility to respond to the urgent need in this community.  Babies are dying everyday – and now we have an effective way to serve these women comprehensively with sound medical care as well as the information and counsel to allow them to make a truly informed choice.

Turning fear into confidence

Research has shown that when women have access to ultrasound, it dramatically increases the number of those who choose life.  *When ultrasound is combined with counseling, 88% of women at risk for abortion leave Pro-life Pregnancy Help Medical Clinics with intentions of carrying their babies to term.   After offering them pregnancy and STD tests - we want these women to make a truly informed decision – we will educate them about open, closed and semi-open adoption and refer them to Catholic Charities and Bethany Christian Services, we will educate them about Abortion – Procedures, Risks and Side effects as well as show them their baby via ultrasound*, we will create a Personalized Solutions Assessment for them with referrals to pro pro-life OBGyn and Family Practice Physicians in this area, we will refer and set-up appointments for them with New Beginnings a local material assistance program that teaches accountability and parenting through group and one-on-one counseling and classes that also provides diapers, formula, clothing and furniture to these new moms.  We will also refer them to area churches that have bible studies and other programs geared toward women and young mothers such as MOPS.  We will also refer them to other area agencies that may be able to assist them once they have chosen life for their baby.

We Need A Culture Change

The abortion numbers in Iowa City, IA are staggering.  The city population is 62,220 and ~3,000 is the number of babies dying every year, enough babies are killed in Iowa City to equal 4.8% of Iowa City's total population - each year! We need a culture change in Iowa City and the surrounding communities. In order for a culture change to occur, we need to educate and equip parents and teens about pre-marital sex and its results - emotional distress, sexually transmitted disease and unplanned pregnancy. We need to teach parents how to encourage healthy relationships and we need to teach teens what a healthy relationship is.  We need to have a medical clinic that offers Christ-centered, life affirming counseling and medical care when a young woman needs it most, in a crisis pregnancy situation.  We need to offer these women information that is uncompromised and without conflict of interest (we will not profit from their choice).
